Checkpoints exist for a reason. Checkpoints exist to control the movement of personnel in and out of restricted areas.
This checkpoint is in a war zone. During a war, one imposes ones will through the use of deadly force. It should not, therefore, be a surprise that soldiers manning a checkpoint in a war zone are willing and able to fire upon a vehicle that does not comply with the soldiers' instructions.
Mr Capileri had at least one oppurtunity to completely avoid this - by coordinating with US forces before he left the airport, and in so doing provide an escort for his return. He did not do so. That is the primary contributing factor for his death.
The soldiers were doing their jobs.
