Believe me, I've looked at it, and there are as many different answers as there are studies.
A few major points:
- It is a myth that illegals are doing work nobody else will do. In states that have few illegals living there, amazingly, all the scut work still gets done. It just pays a bit more.
More accurate statement: Illegals do work for wages nobody else will take.
- We are dealing with a real security issue. We can't overlook that any more.
- We are getting zero cooperation on this from Mexico. Bush hasn't done much in this area.
A more realistic approach, other than a wall, might be to simply increase the number of enforcement officers, and crack down on enforcing existing laws against hiring and such. Unfortunately, Bush has done a crappy job in these areas, too.
