Ghandi and MLK were very religious people, I do not believe in any religion but I will freely admit that faith can give individuals incredible power to do great things- unfortunately it also allows people to do great evil, in the name of god.
When I was a kid I had a friend whose father was a preacher, I watched his father violently throw his kid around for MILD transgressions. Now that disgusting bastard probably had the bible memorized, but he wasnt holy- he was just a sick twisted man that got off on making those weaker than himself fear him...
Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and Osama are also 'religious people'- they USE their religion to justify and bolster their hatred of others...
Religion can give people strength to sacrifice much, even their own lives, for an ideal... this has given us great people like MLK and Mother Theresa, but it has also given us suicide bombers.
I think it is important to remember that morality does not require a religion- most humans feel good when they do good for their fellow human beings... Who is the more moral person- one that does good hoping to score points with god so god wont torture them in hell for eternity, or the person that does good just because it makes them feel better to do so?

I really have no problem with the devout...
