The climate is very constant here- my bedroom windows have all been open for nearly 2 years. Winter is the rainy season where I live, but winter only brings rain and slightly cooler temperatures- sometimes nasty storms.
The summit is a totally different place... and in no way representative of weather on the island.
I have a fireplace and have only used it twice, the coldest it has gotten where I live is cold enough to make me reluctant to leave my bed... maybe mid 50's.
If you come in the spring you will see more flowers, but the temperatures on this island are very moderate mostly in any season. If you come to the big island you MUST see Waipio valley, and if possible the lava flow...(I do NOT reccomend the tour down into Waipio valley)...
The town I live in, Waimea, is surrounded by beautiful steep green cindercones. It is lovely but doesnt have much in the way of things to do.
If you want to visit the summit I strongly suggest that you rent a vehicle from a company that expllicitly says its ok to take the car to the summit, and do NOT do the guided tour.

Mauna Kea is not typical of the islands
