Why not mineral laden hot water, take away any obvious edifice and what we may have at the Columbia Hills is the distal portion of a black smoker like vent. The suspected enrichment of metals from the hills could be interpreted as geothermal-like w/o to much problem. Perhaps the sulfates we see scattered around the martian globe are gassen like features.
