Bigger issues

Relativistic effects and fuel/structure mass fraction will probably cap the top speed of a starship to under 0.1 c. That means transit times between star systems is on the order of a century. This in turn means a biological flight crew would be soaking up primary cosmic rays for that period of time (cosmic rays are far worse than gammas). The only way people are travelling to other star systems is as information. Have their DNA stored in the memory of the starship's autopilot. After reaching the target star system, the autopilot would chemically reconstruct the human crew and then raise them to adulthood using human-like puppets (think of a high tech version of the Abraham Lincoln puppet used at Disneyland). A starship isn't practical unless it has a HAL-9000 type autopilot (something with consciousness and self awareness) to deal with in-flight malfunctions and refitting the ship once it is in-system. Therefore using the same machine to raise biologicals is not that unreasonable.
