Why refit?

I'm assuming any interstellar mission would be a one way colonization effort. The ships wouldn't be launched until a planet was found that had the signs for supporting life. A crew of a few hundred (stored in stasis) with 50-100 thousand tons of equipment and supplies. The ships would travel at 10-20 percent c and be able to establish an independent colony.
