I have some skepticism about what seems to be the underlying assumption in your snarkfest: That scientists have absolutely nothing to gain, financially or professionally, by "steering" data toward a conclusion approved by their culture, publication authorities, and, especially, by their funding sources.
The source I posted on the CE board shows just one example of what can happen if scientists don't tow the party line.
Everybody's got an axe to grind in this controversy. Don't forget it.
