Just keep your eyes open.

I have no more omniscience about motivations than you do, and not enough time or skill to backtrack long and complex papers and references to see if some assumption has been thrown in unnecessarily.

I'm just saying that assuming that only one side is unbiased is not safe. Working in the tech industry, I can tell you that there is always a resistance to change, especially from "outside."

There is a "party line" in many scientific fields, and has been since the beginnings of science. The history of science has often consisted of mavericks busting, with difficulty, through this party line to go off in some new direction. Darwin wasn't always an "everybody knows that."

Of course this doesn't mean that the establishment is always wrong. Sometimes the maverick is the one who's full of it.

But the party line can be wrong, even if there are hundreds of scientists nodding in agreement.
