How BS becomes 'Common Knowledge'- interesting study in how crap like this spreads and evolves.

First this loon posted his sillyness on nuforc, Then 'UFOCasebook' picked it up, Then Phenomenamagazine picked it up (http://www.phenomenamagazine.com/0/editorial.asp?aff_id=0&this_cat=Area+51&action=page&type_id=&cat_id=69&obj_id=3084) then it was picked up by Steve Quayle News alerts (http://www.stevequayle.com/News.alert/05_Unexplained/050427.English.UFOs.html)

The nonsense then mutated and became (http://ufoinfo.com/filer/2005/ff0518.shtml):

FT. HOOD, TEXAS -- A physicist and an FAA Licensed Pilot saw a triangle shaped craft flying at 800 feet with an airspeed of 30 mph floating over Sydney, Texas, on March 9, 2005. The observer saw lettering on the side of a triangular craft that was about sixty feet wide and eighty feet long and ten feet thick at the rear. Under its belly, there was a straight line going from its leading tip toward the center of the aft edge of the fuselage, which was perpendicular to its travel. This straight edge clearly showed its shape to be three-dimensional. The straight line showed that its belly was V-shaped, much like the hull of a speedboat. It was similar to the space shuttle as when viewed from in front and below the shuttle and had well-fitted tiles also like the Shuttle. There was a distinct marking, a red arrow pointing towards three words, EMERGENCY RELEASE and RESCUE. Thanks to Peter Davenport www.nuforc.com

Texas - Peculiar Military Craft Witnessed?

We suspect that it is a craft flown by the U. S. military. If anyone recognizes the object, and knows what it is, please contact our Center with details. Note how the date of the incident has morphed to MARCH 9th. ALSO note that the ANONYMOUS original poster has now become a 'QUALIFIED OBSERVER'... It is funny that while these nuts cant keep the original date of the 'sighting' consistent they are able to keep the mis-spelling of the town SIDNEY in all the rehashings of the same stupid hoax. NOT ONE investigated it enough to catch the mis-spelling of the towns name!!!!

The story even went international!!!! This Dutch(?) website went to the trouble of translating this from english: http://www.ufoplaza.nl/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2306

They even had a picture of the trusty rifle that almost shot down the UFO:

It also made it to a chinese language website: http://www.wo007.com/index2.htm

It is fascinating that this easily disproven story that is incorrect in the spelling of the town where it supposedly occurred has spread around the world in under a month thanks to the internet. All thanks to gullible loons that are too lazy to think critically about the garbage before spreading it.

I was not able to find one reposting of this fabrication that ever corrected the name of the town... Or pointed out the flaws in the story....
