Through much of the oil "crisis" many years ago, when gas prices first started to climb past the two-digit figures they had held at for years, smug liberals would be constantly telling me that in Europe, where everyone was so much better and wiser than Americans, they routinely paid two or three dollars a gallon for gas, and were much better off for it.
Of course, much of this price over there was, and is, taxes. It's interesting that liberals who bewail the effect of high gas prices on those who have financial difficulties have no problem with dropping a buck or two in additional taxes on gasoline. Apparently, the poor aren't affected by paying taxes at a pump, only by pumping money into the coffers of evil oil executives.
