"Pwokenyaw said: 'Seems that many folks on the right continue to insist there's no firm evidence of global warming and average temperatures are likely to stay the same or drop in coming years. I know, there are people here at HZ that admit there's warming but deny it's anthropogenic. I'm interested in going after the others, who deny there's any warming happening or that future warming will happen."
My prediction is that the AVERAGE temperatures are likely to stay the same. The key word here is "average", there will be more RECORD temperatures both cold and hot. The reason for my belief in this (pseudoscientific) prediction can be found in the study of a classic science experiment where water is boiling and freezing at the same time. "
I can almost agree with you [which is somewhat frightening:].
But we have had periods in the last 2000 years where it was apparently much warmer than today- globally [or at least settled large regions]. And the average temperature in the US appears to be lowering over decadal time frame, so I wouldn't be surprising if this were to turn around in the US region.
But as I said before the best [or simplest] signs of global warming in increasing global sea level. And as far as I know sea levels have been fairly steadily rising and continue to rise at the present. Now there could other factors which are getting involved which are distorting this in some way. So if you moniter glaciers as we are doing via satellites this can used to check and confirm the sea level rise. In other words if we losing in the mass of global glaciers we are warming, and if we gaining then we are cooling. It's my best guess that we evenually [over decades of time] get measurablely warmer [sea levels will continue to rise and we will lose mass in mass of global glacier]. But short term [less than 10 years] to me it's pretty much a wild guess if it globally warms or cools or says essentially flat.
But what the planet actually does compared to what people generally think it's doing is not neccessary the same. So not only do you need to predict what is going to actually happen but you need to predict what "informed opinion" is claiming is happening. Now if you could agree what the current global temperature is; and have it as the standard of measure [and have confidence that they don't change the measuring by improving it's accuracy or having the accuracy degraded in some way] then you are close to having something to be betting about. But doesn't mean you are actually betting on whether the planet is warming or cooling.
And finally you have the problem that pwokenyaw brings up- if you actually win the bet how do you collect. It could be that the "rational judgement" would be that you won, but this does stop some crazy from demanding that *he* actually won the bet and annoying you to such an degree that you decide it's much cheaper and simply less painless to pay the lousy 100 bucks just to shut the fool up.
OR if you are so desperate to bet about something, go to a goddamn professional [a bookie].
