Space/Science » in reply to Parts of the Grand Canyon were once mountains higher than Everest

North America looked a lot different a billion years ago.

I think I have mentioned this before. Enchanted Rock, in the Texas Hill Country, is a tiny part of a Batholiths. This Batholiths is the root of an ancient mountain. The mountain was part of the Ouachita mountain range, which stretched across Texas, through Arkansas, and over to the Appalachians. These mountains were formed when continents slammed together to form Pangaea.

The flat Texas coastal plane I live on is the sedimentary remnants of that eroded mountain range.

I find it all very interesting.
