Hi Nick
Your scorn is appropriate for a lot of Carey's wannabe successors but Herndon claims that the current expansion is less than what GPS can measure - of course he'd say that, but it at least shows he's aware of the issues.
Junk science still - I can't imagine how a Jupiter-scale planet could've cooled to form a solid core as his scenario requires. Some current models of Jupiter have indicated that it is still so hot that any core has been volatilised and mixed into the rest of the planet. But Herndon is a slippery thinker so I'm sure he has a dodge. And a once molten mantle is what many core formation scenarios, in orthodox opinion, require. How that state would be distinguished from the guts of a Jovian is hard to skein.
