Nonsense?
I did a quick calculation of the kinetic energy of the collision, It comes out to be the equivalent of just about 4.4 tons of TNT- A hefty amount to be sure, but I cant imagine ANY military use for this....
Are all kinetic energy projectiles limited to the size of Deep Impact's?
hitting Earth with that relative velocity would be pretty damn hard to arrange
Now yes, in the future maybe not.
and would be impossible on short notice-
Are all military operations short notice ones?
You have to get that velocity somehow... and any reasonable sized projectile would just burn up in the atmosphere?
There is a thing called a heat shield.
WHY go through all that trouble when you can just send a few steath bomber missions at a target...
Probably not a useful tactical weapon but a WMD without the radiation fallout.
I fully believe the science of this mission was the driving force behind it but to say the military would take no interest at all in an experiment like this is naive.
