Space/Science » in reply to Which has NOTHING to do with Deep Impact

I was replying to your statement...

So what?! hitting Earth with that relative velocity would be pretty damn hard to arrange and would be impossible on short notice- You have to get that velocity somehow... and any reasonable sized projectile would just burn up in the atmosphere? WHY go through all that trouble when you can just send a few steath bomber missions at a target...

Deep Impact was a kinetic impact of a guided projectile. Your statement came across to me as saying all such efforts lack any military utility. I disagree, and so does the Air Force. CAV isn't necessarily a kinetic impact weapon although it could carry penetration devices to go after bunkers. It would be designed not to burn up in the atmosphere and could reach just about anywhere on Earth in about 30 minutes. Expensive, yes, but when you really need to reach out and squash someone quickly, there is military utility in such a weapon.
