And I quote:
When you truly love your country, you must also care about all the people in it. When you do care about them you show them a certain respect.
The difference between James Carroll and Don is Don's posts are more succinct and don't as skillfully conceal their contempt of Bush, conservatives or the war.
And from your response to my response to the above:
And, please don't misread me, I'm certainly not saying one has to love everyone in America. Love comes with understanding and we don't know or understand lots of people.
So what form of "care about" are we using if it isn't the "agape" form of love? You know, that "Good Samaritan" thing. The only understanding of others that that implies is an understanding of our common humanity. Not even, let me add, our common American citizenship.
Also, the war is something that one can oppose and still care about the people involved in it. It's a series of actions (planned and accidental), some of them fatal, most of them violent.
I'll tell you what: You start applying your high principles uniformly, and vocally, and I'll stop darning you to heck. Re: Ann & Co., as with other things: silence implies consent on the books, though sometimes it implies fatigue or disgust. Which of those options does it imply for you?

Just say what you mean and then stick with it.
