re: Being able to shut off the engine??

Evers since Challenger we keep reading about the SRBs not being able to shut off the motor, compared to liquid boosters where that's possible.

How can that be a 'safer" argument? How can one hope , after engine ignition, to save a mission when the engine can be shut off?
The rocket will collapse and crash on the ground and everything will explode. A SRB will send the rocket far away from the launch pad and at least , the momentum upwards can give a chance to a crew, with the Launch escape tower.
