re: reading levels vs. listening levels

Figures you'd like Junie B Jones. My daughter has spunk too, that's the problem. :) We've worked too hard at keeping dumb and stupid from being a 'well used' part of her vocabulary to let Junie B. Jones ruin it all. She starts Kindergarten this fall, which will introduce even more words I'm sure. We'll probably revisit Junie at some point in the future though.

Next on the list: Ramona and Her Father. :)

Her reading level is at the beginning stages of the cat sat on the mat type of stuff, so were still picking up the readers and picture books for her. I'm hoping the chapter books help with retension and memory. Not that she has a memory problem though, she's been memorizing the picture books since I started reading to her, I'm just hoping to broaden the skills and get her to hold onto a story thread over the course of a few days (not to mention my own sanity). She's loving the longer books as am I, so its been a success.

BTW one problem with the picture books/readers, is she looks at the pictures instead of the words and thinks she's reading. That and her memorization skills seem to work against actual reading skills. She still young, so that will get ironed out in time and I'm not overly concerned. Heck her reading level is much higher than mine was at 5 years old, since my parents never thought to teach me to read instead letting the first grade teacher handle that. And they were both teachers, go figure.

Thanks for the suggestions on the books, I'll look into some of the others. Hopefully my library has a lot of them.
