Australians, Chileans, and Argentinians have been dying in increasing numbers due to radiataion let in by the expanding holes in the ozone. Holes have now appeared in the ozone in the northern hemisphere, and deaths due to the same cause will be occuring in Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Scotland.
Some have claimed that the aluminum in solid propellant rockets works as a catalyst in the Freon reaction which has been depleting the ozone. I can not evaluate those cliams, other than to point out that during the Challenger grounding, the rate of ozone depletion was greatly reduced. It will be interesting to see if the same thing has occured during the Columbia grounding, but the ozone hole data has not yet been released in a combined graphic form.
Thus my own answer to the question "How many Australians, Chileans, and Argentinians has ATk killed this year?" is "I don't know." But it might be nice to have this question definitively answered before the US commits itself to building new launch vehicles using solid propellants.
How many Australians, Argentinians, and Chileans has ATK killed this year?
