Just because totalitarian states have pseudo-unions doesn't mean unions lead to totalitarianism. The heyday of unions in the US coincides precisely with the "good old days" you are always bringing up when complaining about how liberals have turned us into a People's Republic.
When workers get treated with dignity and respect they feel they have a personal stake in the company's success. When they are treated like interchangeable and disposable carbon units, they respond accordingly.
This contempt for the working man on the part of management comes from the new breed of corporate MBA-type leader, who is not familiar with his industry or market, but sees the firm as just a machine for generating revenue that any generalist with the appropriate entrepreneurial mentality and cultural values can operate equally well as long as he is left alone.
Or to put it another way, just because you can run an airline doesn't mean you're qualified to run a chain of supermarkets.

- Unions, collective bargaining, and the right to strike.
- Yeah, I think we all owe a debt to unions.
