Well it's certainly a piece of fiction.
Does anyone take the position that the US should not have assisted in war against the Soviets in Afghanistan?
Does anyone object to providing stinger missiles to the people who were willing to defeat the Soviet miltary?
Oh, I can see how this might piss off Lefties who supported the soviet union, but are they *still* fighting the Cold War which they have obviously lost?
Let's grab some of other things which false:
"Fahd was a timid man and resisted Reagan's instructions briefly, but finally gave in to enormous US pressure."
Fahd timid? Interesting.
"By giving the Muj weaponry like the stinger shoulderheld missile, which could destroy advanced Soviet arms like their helicopter gunships, Reagan demonstrated to the radical Muslims that they could defeat a super power."
As though a super power hasn't been defeated before. Vietnam, anyone? And what was the alternative, send US forces into Afghanistan to directly confront the Soviets and possibly lead to a nuclear exchange? And how could Reagan predict whether or not a Dem might become president and do as the Dem usually do- lose wars and get into situation in a nuclear war is quite possible, then caving into soviet demands [JFK].
The only other solution is whine about Soviet aggression and do nothing to stop it- not follow the doctrine of containment.
In other words Cole knows nothing and is liar [see below].
"In the meantime, Saddam, whom the US had built up as a major military power, invaded Kuwait."
All you have to do is look at the weapons that Saddam's Iraq used- mostly Soviet and some French. Then look at countries which the US has actually supported- for instance Iran was once support by US. Or Isreal, or Saudi Arabia, or Egypt, here you will find US weapon systems. In fact a measure of how close an ally is can be measured by the weapon system which can be sold to a country. For instance, which countries in the world have F-15 Eagles- a combat aircraft which has never been shot down and has 100 kills. Or who has F-16? Or who get the Patriot anti-air system.
Perhaps even more important than weapon systems is miltary training- and Saddam got soviet weapons systems and soviet miltary training.
