Cokie Roberts's remembrance of Peter Jennings.
The morning after Peter Jennings died, Roberts said that she will always think of him together with the US Presidential election of 2004. I thought when I heard this she was going to say, because it was the kind of bitterly partisan election that is so interesting for a journalist of Jennings's caliber to report on.
But no. In her next breath, she explained that Peter Jennings, after decades of living and working in the United States, had become a US citizen in 2003. She said he was, after all those years of reporting American elections, so excited and proud to cast his first ballot in an American Presidential election. "He never thought his first election would be his only election," she said.
