I don't know what to make of this, but it's probably relevant to your comments. At the time of Eric's post at about 7AM this morning, 63,084 people had responded to the survey. Yet now, nine hours later, only an additional 25 people have taken it (and I'll bet some number of Zoners are included in the total). There's no indication when the poll first opened, but it couldn't have been more than a day or so. That huge pulse of respondents followed by almost nothing does tend to suggest a freeping campaign.
That would have been a Leftist freeping campaign, so now I'm wondering why the Rightists are MIA. If we keep monitoring the poll, it's possible that by the end of the day tomorrow, a late-blooming Conservative freeping campaign will reduce the 94%. This could be interesting. Stay tuned.
The above phenomenon is why I think freeping has lost a lot of its power, now that both sides know of the technique. If that poll was freeped, it was freeped by the Left. The end result could actually be a happy one: If two sides freep with equal intensity, the results might in fact turn out to be somewhat accurate. (Of course, if I take at face value the claim of Conservatives like Tom about the power of the online Conservative presence, as exemplified by blogs, I'd have to discount a Right-leaning result more than I'd discount a Left-leaning result. Ironic...)
Relatively minor quibble, in context:
I woudn't be so convinced that the non-randomized nature of online polls only introduces moderate bias -- little enough that lopsided results accurately refelect the general opinions you'd see from a representative survey.
That's not quite what I said. I talked about "reflecting" the results around the middle, which in effect means reversing the polarity of the result. Reversing the results is not a moderate bias by any means. Where I'm more likely to be proven wrong is speculating that 94% has to be more than ballot-stuffing. 63-odd thousand respondents is a lot of respondents to produce a result that lopsided--statistically you'd expect a lot of Conservatives to discover the poll even if they're not alerted by a freeping campaign. There's about a 25-to-1 disparity.
But we shall see. I'll keep monitoring the poll.
