I'm not sure what the mechanism for live news captions is. I visualize somebody along the lines of a court stenographer slapping it into the system as fast as someone can talk. Or maybe it's some kind of speech recognition system. I'll look it up sometime when I'm inspired to.
There are some interesting typos, that's for sure.
Regular series have their captions prepared ahead of time, and sometimes you can see where a script change is made when the caption goes off in one direction while the characters go in another.
My irritation here stems from the inane idea that the reason newscasters have diarrhea of the mouth is a generous gesture so that blind people can keep up with the news, when in fact it's another symptom of a news media that is far too self-indulgent.
Maybe Mary Anne's next theory will be that low-riders fix their cars that way so handicapped people can get into them more easily.
