Current Events » in reply to I thought Liberals were big supporters of innocent until proven guilty. So far there has been no real evidence against DeLay.

There has been enough to procure an indictment.

It has not yet been demonstrated that there is enough to convict. That is, wrongdoing, yes, but is it bad enough to be called "criminal"? We don't yet know. That's still innocent until proven guilty. Only now, not quite as innocent as a newborn lamb, but more of the "not guilty" kind of innocent.

Indictment requires preliminary evidence to procure. Ronnie Earle couldn't just stand on the streetcorner and indict someone at the top of his lungs. I don't know anything about his motives, but he couldn't have gotten this far with only a pair of twos and a good bluff.

Personally, I think that Tom DeLay, and Republican leadership generally, ought to be held to the same standards as everyone else. The first story you linked to says that candidates thought the donations were legal. Maybe, maybe not, but in either case, ignorance is no excuse, only the ticket to a reduced sentence. Especially when we're talking about lawyers, who know better, or ought to.

I was denied access to your second link, so I don't know what the statement was that you agree with.
