True enough. The parallels need to be examined on a case-by-case basis. However, I do often hear people making an issue about how WWII took less time than the war on terror (including the Afghanistan War). One reason for that may have been a tactical approach that included scorched-earth attacks and nuclear weapons.
As I've said before, the major consequence of a "kinder, gentler war" is a lot fewer civilians dead, but a lot more of our troops.
