re: You can set aside anything you want except the First Amendment.

Well, I've held my tongue long enough. I do, from time to time, gaze into this bed of knowledge and idiocy to remind myself of why I stopped responding. Occassionally though, there's a topic where I'm really tempted to jump in and this one pulled harder than the rest.

What a wonderful thought for our schools, teaching a truly balanced comparative religion class. Show the true evolution of the religious powerhouses and the political processes that put them there. Talk about the real motivating factors that divided the various factions into warring camps and creative editing of religious texts and manuscripts that many view as the "word of God" today. Let there be the debate by young and eager minds about these topics in an arena that isn't controlled by clerics and preachers that have major conflicts of interest in spoonfeeding their flocks only the compelling parts of the story to advance their cause.

Somehow I don't think it would be the liberals and moderates blocking this possibility and maybe it's even wrong for me to think that the opposition would have anything to do with party lines. Let me put it this way. The ones standing in the way of a comparative religion course as I or Mary Anne described being taught in our public schools, would be people that were insecure in their beliefs - which I truly believe is the majority of people calling themselves religious or spiritual. It's why you see this orchestrated push to bring Jesus into our public schools. There's safety in numbers when you have doubts. I'll be the first to concede that Christians are an absolute majority in this country but our founding ideals should tell us that makes no difference in public policy.

Let the light be turned on.
