If one had a ton of material - - -

Say, the plastic explosive C4, and put it in the middle of a field.

Now, put a match to it, and watch it burn. It will take some time, create a lot of smoke and gases, and leave some ash. The immediate surroundings will stay habitable.

Now, take another ton of C4 and introduce a detonator. That C4 will explode, a lot of smoke and gas produced immediately, and there will be a large hole in the ground. The immediate surroundings will not be habitable, and in fact anyone near will die.

In both cases the C4 transforms itself, in the first case over a little time and in the second case almost instantaneously.

There are those who are saying that both occurrences are identical. They are claiming that in the case of global warming what happened over thousands of years is identical to what is happening in one generation. No need to accept accountability or change anything we are doing.

There is a fatal flaw in that form of thinking.

The same thinking flaw is evident in those who claim that what took billions of years, and may well have started more billions of years ago in another solar system actually started some 6,000 years ago.

All one can do is be aware of the capacity for such thinking and accept it for what it is. And apply the conclusion to their thinking in general, with all the credibility it implies. It's one of the Mysteries of the Multiverse.
