I tend to agree with your conclusions McFly based on evidence and scientific methodology. Personally I think that there's lots of life in the Universe simply because I believe it to be infinite and, with infinite possibilities, the odds are staggering that it exists somewhere else. Now those odds also include the fact that, if life exists elsewhere, it more than likely exists so far away from us that we'll never have any chance to interact with it.
I know the theories of future space travel some have proposed using warped space but, even if those possibilities exist, there's no guarantees that a living creature could survive them. Even if we can simply propel spacecraft to near the speed of light using conventional technology, something as simple as avoiding space dust might be a deal breaker. Bottom line is that, no matter how advanced a civilization might be technologically, the challenge of crossing vast distances within a reasonable passage of time are going to be enormous.
I really think that sightings of UFOs are much in the same vein as sightings of ghosts - simple human wishful thinking. I know I wish it.
