There was a substancial change in bankrupsy law that took effect a few weeks ago

That change requires people who're filing bankrupsy and whose income is above a certain threshold (I think it was those whose income is above the median income of their state) to pay back some of their debt. This change prompted a lot of people to file "get out of debt free" bankrupsies ahead of the deadline.

People go bankrupt for a variety of reasons. Some get into deep financial trouble following a layoff or major illness. Others just never learned that if you spend more than you earn, sooner or later you're bound to get into trouble. I have sympathy for those in the first category. One of my neighbors - a self-employed house painter - lost his home following his wife's major illness. It seems they didn't have adequate health insurance. I have no sympathy for those in the latter group. Ten years ago, I had a coworker who openly stated that she was going to apply for a bunch of credit cards, max them out, then file for bankrupsy. She was basically planning on stealing tens of thousands of dollars. Fortunately, the military revoked her security clearance (she was a drunk) so we were able to get rid of her without being sued.
