LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) is set to be sent to the Moon in 2008.

With the lunar mascons (mass concentrations) you end up with a very elliptical orbit if you want to be stable in orbit around the Moon. So yes LRO will be flying close to the surface and very fast.
