It was for his edification, so he could be aware of it.
The point was that he seemed to think that if there were a homosexual thing going on between Kirk and Spock it should generate energy from us.
I just tried to point out that it's his issue, not ours, no one else seemed to care.
To think you believed it was to score a flame point!!! Why would it do that?
