I have a couple of girlfriends from my teen years, we go waay back. Even if we live on different coasts. We share our problems and laugh about our resolutions. We admire and adore each other. We get together for a few days at a time every few years and drink a bottle of wine and enjoy our long standing relationship. "Catching up", we see a lot of the same problems at the same time. To me, this is one of the understated and unacknowledged joys of a long life. When we hug each other with feelings of love and appreciation, it is the same as with a mate, only it is non-sexual.
I even have male friends that go back to my teenage years.
There's something about knowing each others' foibles and strengths that can bind people together in any culture. I adore and appreciate the rare times I get to spend with them too. I still "love" them too, and THEIR life mates understand (or, at least accomodate) it.
Long standing friendships. Yes, that would be interesting to share.
