Space/Science » in reply to QUESTION: green LASER pointers and naked eye astronomy

I guess the short answer is....

These things arent toys, use them with care and caution and everything should be fine. The simplest way to avoid trouble is to inspect the area of the sky you want to point it BEFOR you fire it. I doubt you will be doing any observing in areas with low flying planes and your chances of hitting a plane at a distance of many miles is slim. (Also the divergence of these simple pointers is so large that its effects will be greatly reduced at such distances). Just execise resonable caution and everything will be fine. There is no reason you cant continue to use a laser pointer for your star parties.

(Just keep it out of the hands of the kids)
