When Jimmy Carter was first elected, I was disappointed, but one of the bright spots was that I figured, Hey, we've got a guy who knows some engineering and has some familiarity with nuclear power. At least nuclear power won't be a boogeyman to him. Didn't quite turn out that way.
I don't know who would make a good spokesman who wouldn't be seen as a puppet of the industry. The fact that leftist France is comfortable with nuclear power is amazing enough, and for a lot of otherwise nuclear-hostile people, maybe that would make some impression.
We definitely need some education to counteract the years of fearmongering on this subject. I think the CO2 and fossil fuel issues will help a lot.

Good question.
