Fuel economy improvements

"Credible studies show that with plausible technology developments, biofuels could supply some 30 percent of global demand in an environmentally responsible manner without affecting food production," Steven Koonin, chief scientist for BP in London, wrote in a commentary. "

So if we plan on reducing fuel consumption by 70 percent, then cars will get 93 mpg. That could be achieved simply by reducing vehicle weight by 70 percent. You've been against this idea in the past, but many people might be interested in single-passenger vehicles.

Single-seat vehicles operate at capacity at all times, where even public transit buses are often half-empty except during rush hour. Where the Smart Car weighs 1600 pounds and needs a 60 hp engine, a single-seat car might be only 500 pounds and have lots of pep with an 18 hp engine. A Bullet-shaped Car design could be standard, with interior stowage for groceries or a knapsack, and an aerodynamic pod that snaps-on to the top or rear that can hold a big suitcase. Fully enclosed the driver would be encased in airbags and roll-cage, and shielded from wind and cold in the winter. Lightweight aluminum honeycomb frame, composite windfairings, aerogel insulation, hybrid ethanol-electric engine, intermittent engine-off on downhill slopes, etc. can all contribute to high fuel economy.

Looking at this photo, this type of vehicle design has been done over and over again for decades, never finding a niche market. Someday sheer economics might be what makes them popular, and just the right combination of technologies and looks. I'd love to design a product line myself, but... where's the opportunity? Where do I apply for the job? I don't know. Low profit margins tend to do them in. It's like how computer retailers won't sell a computer unless it's over $1000.
