Lowering ethanol production costs

In addition to making better use of plant parts that were normally waste, we can lower the cost of the distilling process by using waste heat from factories and powerplants. Distilling ethanol doesn't require high heat. In fact, the temperature doesn't have to be as much as 100 C. Instead of throwing waste heat out of a cooling tower, it could be used to distill ethanol. It would mean locating the distillery fairly close to the powerplant or factory but in most cases that shouldn't be a problem, especially for coal fired powerplants that have rail spurs nearby.

Running higher concentration ethanol could present problems for some vehicles, such as issues with gaskets and some materials. Nothing insurmountable, but things to consider just the same. I encountered this when I ran high octane auto gas in my plane. The auto fuel had ethanol in it and that reacted with the rubber in my fuel sump drains, causing some leaks. I ended up having to replace the drain valves. I can't run auto gas in the plane anymore since I had higher compression ratio pistons installed, so this isn't an issue any more. I miss the cheaper gas but enjoy the extra 10 horsepower.
