I was at work at Hughes Aircraft then. I took a break to go out to my car and listen to the launch by NASA audio on the ham radio. All seemed to be going well when right after “Go at throttle up†I heard the fffffttt sound and had a little twinge “what was thatâ€? Then shortly there after the NASA commentator said “obviously a major malfunctionâ€. I quickly switched to KNX radio (L.A.s CBS station) and heard the reporter describing all the debris falling. After a short time of listening numbly to that I quickly went back in to work thinking I was going to tell everybody what happened. They already knew, and were listening to a radio in someone’s office. We all said OH NO, isn’t Greg Jarvis on that flight.
