re: Gemini 8 early return and BATMAN
Though I cannot remember the details, apparently the splashdown of Gemini 7 was made as a small image in the corner of the TV screen so as not to interrupt whatever regular program was being shown at the same time (probably a football game).
Already the decline was beginning even in 1965.
