Four killed in cartoon protests
Four people have died in violent protests against cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad, following more than a week of demonstrations.
Three people died after police in Afghanistan fired on protesters when a police station came under attack, a government spokesman said.
In Somalia, a 14-year-old boy was shot dead and several others were injured after protesters attacked the police.
Four killed in cartoon protests
In this country we have a heritage of defending one's right to speak no matter how offensive. Apparently, among some Muslims there is a heritage of violently defending one's right to not be offended. Frankly, I prefer the former over the latter. But now we know why creating democracies in the Middle East may be a fool's errand. One cannot have democracy if one cannot speak one's mind for fear of one's life.
Putting it simply, the cartoons may have been offensive, but nothing, absolutely nothing justifies violence intent upon muzzling voices we do not like...nothing.
