You read Iain M. Banks?
He has written extensively on a future civilisation where intelligent starships are the intellectual focus but there is still room for (modified) humans.
Be careful, he writes two strings of books one as Iain Banks and one as Iain M.
One is SF and the other is terrestrial, but still good reading.
