You've got a point
There have been some serious screwups by some serious screwups. BUT, we can't allow religious fundamentalism to gain a foothold. A screwup in power is a lesser evil than a purposeful and systematic oppressor. That said, I don't know how the screwups can admit screwing up without the fundies gaining ground, either Muslim or Christian. They've got a set of principles that they point to and it gives them the illusion of being principled. Am I repeating myself?
