We have gotten close to breakeven

ITER is expected to achieve 10 times energy breakeven. (not enough for a power plant, which could require 30 times breakeven, but progress is obviously being made).

The fusion produced so far has problems, but we can never solve them if we give up.

There are altenatives to tokamaks, such as ICF, Zpinch, muon catalyzed fusion... I dont know if any of these will pan out... I AM certain that the first reactor will utilize things learned from our continued study of the subject- it will take decades more of study but if we dont do those studies then it will NEVER happen.
