Yes, it is all about how I look at fairness. I don't see it as "for the good of the whole at the expense of the individual."
I don't see it as an imposition on me at all. In fact, I think that any system that is unfair to others is bound to get around to being unfair to me, eventually.
I am willing to pay a price in my individual freedoms if it means increased freedoms for everyone. I am willing to give up my right to drive too fast on the freeway because it means everybody is safer, myself included.
And I don't believe freedoms should be for sale, that I can getter better medical care or a better education, or better police or fire protection, or a better lawyer if I'm arrested just because I can afford to pay for it and others can't.
