Ok, Mauna Kea isnt the moon, but the way pumice dust sticks to optics has surprised me...
I came up with a way to clean our projection lens... simply wiping it off would destroy the coating... so I have to clean it without really touching it...
I came up with a process that I was sure would work, I would spray on acetone and blow it off with high pressure nitrogen gas, then I would do the same with pure ethanol... I tried it and it did not, as far as I could tell, remove a speck of pumice dust...
The solution came with a new product, called Opti-clean, it is a gooey liquid that you paint onto the optic that you want to clean... you give it time to dry and then peel off the solid film it creates- when you peel off the film, all contaminates on the optic are peeled off as well... in my opinion this is a miracle solution... I have tested it on a few square inches of our output lens, the difference it made was obvious to anyone that looked...
Perhaps a modified but similar concept could be used to clean dust off of space suits...
