A couple of points:
JPL does send out press releases almost every week on MRO and other spacecraft like Cassini.
Where did you get MRO costing a billion? I've heard half that amount batted around.
I like the count down idea and they surely could do more PR to the public as the budget pressures are going to only get worse.
