The Methanol Economy

If we are headed towards a methanol economy, what are the hazardous by products of mining and converting coal to methanol? Aren't there harmful emissions released during that process? If there are, are they more easily contained? I do not particurlarly embrace the idea of cutting down air cleansing forests to plant sugar cane fields for meth or ethanol production. I do not think there are many places in the continental US where that would be possible, based on the amount of irrigation needed for sugar cane.
Sorry for so many questions, but it seems most of what I read in the News is biased, or contradictory to other articles.
Does anyone really know?
