Mary Magdalene's entry in the Saints Index, at www.catholic.org, identifies her as a sinner but doesn't go into what sins those might be, except pride, which is one of the 7 Deadlies.
Tradition confuses Magdalene with the woman who was about to be stoned for adultery. That woman is never identified. Jesus comes along and says to the men, "Let he among you who is without sin be the first to cast a stone." This is the only instance in the Gospels in which Jesus is recorded as writing rather than speaking: he bends down and writes in the dirt with his finger. As he writes, one by one the would-be executioners drop their rocks and walk away. He turns to her and says, "Go, and sin no more." John 8:2-11 He didn't say, "Follow me," which Magdalene most certainly did.
This text, btw, is the one most frequently cited by Christians who oppose the death penalty.
I think Magdalene is called a hooker because Jesus said she is forgiven much because she has loved much. That wasn't the kind of "love" he meant, but you know how people are. nudge nudge wink wink say no more say no more
