I can't really improve on what the others have recommended...

but, as Jimmy Durante used to say, "Everybody has to get into the act".

First if your friends are knowledgeable wine drinkers and you are not, it would be wise to stick to a dry wine. A white would probably be preferable for a Thanksgiving afternoon.

In my wine drinking days, I liked Chablis. It is clean and very dry, but it might be considered droll by today's winies.

My dear wife likes Chardonnay. It is versatile and goes with most courses. Personally, I hate it for being a bit too heavy and fruity but I think it is still popular.

I hear that German whites are in these days but I know nothing more than that.

Riesling that Tom mentioned is very versatile and would be a great choice

I always liked dry reds. My favorite was Cabernet. Merlot is also very good. It was all the rage 10 or so years ago, but it may be passe these days.

Then and now I would prefer a decent Scotch.
